A collapsed sewer in Mitcham is expected to cause rush hour havoc this evening.

The sewer, at the junction of Upper Green East and London Road, collapsed overnight. One lane has been closed while Thames Water and Merton Council work to fix the damage.

Merton Council is warning drivers to avoid the area until repairs have been made.

A spokeswoman for Merton Council confirmed that water supplies will not be affected.

She added: "The area affected is just the point of collapse on that junction.

"One lane remains closed there while Thames Water and Merton Council work to assess the damage and work out the repairs needed."

More to follow.
