These are the latest pictures of the £800m expansion at Waterloo station which will see at least 20 trains arrive in an hour to the refurbished former Eurostar platforms.

The investment by Network Rail will see platforms 20 to 24 - the former Eurostar platforms closed in 2007 before the service was moved to St Pancras - opened up to allow more trains to arrive in the capital.

Accessibility to the new platforms, which are close to the narrow west entrance of the station, will be increased with a lower and upper concourse in construction to allow for passenger flow.

A bridge from the west entrance of the station will take passengers up to the platforms, where more seating and gating is to be implemented.

A lower concourse will more ticket gates, along with an expanse of retail outlets for commuters to peruse before or after their journeys.

The £800m project also promises for increased passenger capacity, with a brand new fleet of 150 carriages, courtesy of South West Trains, delivering commuters from along the Windsor and Eton Riverside line, benefitting Whitton, Twickenham and Richmond.

The new 10-car trains, two carriages longer than the current model, will provide air conditioning, wi-fi and plug sockets - a perk not previously provided to commuters and long-distance travellers.

Stations along the Windsor and Eton Riverside and the Reading lines have seen platform extensions at stations, such as Chertsey, Virginia Water and Feltham, to accommodate for the new trains.

Network Rail bosses had also warned that from next August, stations between Chessington South and Malden Manor will not run for nearly a month as platforms 1-4 at Waterloo, where these trains dock, are extended as part of the revamp.

Aileen Jordan, major projects director at South West Trains, said replacement bus and coach services would be put in place to help passengers travel to and from work, while bosses monitor crowd numbers at other stations.

Platforms 1-9 at Waterloo will be temporarily closed to consider the track layout of these stations while works are underway.
