Transport for London has confirmed that a planned autumn consultation into Crossrail 2 has been pushed back until it can provide an updated business case and funding plan.

Updated proposals for the new railway line were due to be released this autumn, followed by another public consultation on the plans.

The proposals were expected to include more information about whether a station would be built at Tooting Broadway or Balham, as well as possible changes to the plans to demolish large parts of Wimbledon town centre.

However, Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed on Wednesday, October 26, that the new proposals would be delayed.

Responding to question asked by Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond, the former Merton councillor said: “I can absolutely give the commitment that we continue to support Crossrail 2. We are waiting to see a robust business case and a proper funding proposal for Crossrail 2.

“My right honourable friend the transport secretary will in due course set out the timetable for that, but as a former Wimbledonian I can assure my honourable friend that we are well aware of his interest in the Wimbledon to Waterloo aspects of the project, and that the needs of the local area are taken into account.”

The managing director of Crossrail 2, Michelé Dix, also confirmed the news.

In a statement, she said: “Both the prime minister and the transport secretary have reiterated their support for Crossrail 2.

“Their priorities are an updated business case and a robust funding plan for the scheme before we proceed with further formal public consultation."

Although TfL has not said when it expects the next consultation to take place, Mr Hammond said he believed it would be postponed until the second quarter of next year.
