For many of us, the memory of our first half term at secondary school is nothing more than a blur of imposing buildings, masses of scary older students, and the mortifying realisation that we may have to start doing homework on more than one day a week. To see whether this matches up to our thoughts at the time, I spoke to a Year Seven student about his impression of secondary school as his first half term draws to a close.

A key concern for many new students is getting lost. Did you get lost as much as you thought you would?

No. It was hard to find my way around at first, but I used the school map and went around with my friends, and after the first three days it was easy because I knew the school.

Have you made any close friends so far?

Yes, I made friends who are interested in the same things as me. They’re all from my form so far.

How has secondary school been different to primary school so far?

More scary because I have to get the bus and find my own way to all the different classes. I miss how simple primary school was. There was just one class of students you were always with, and one classroom you were always in. But the lessons at secondary school are more interesting.

What are you looking forward to about the rest of your time at secondary school?

I’m looking forward to making more friends, and actually to getting more homework so that I’m not bored at home. I’m also looking forward to going on more exciting school trips than the ones in primary school.

What advice would you give to next year’s Year Sevens?

It’s not as scary as you think it is!

Talking to Daniel revived lots of memories from those early days in secondary school - it seems that not an awful lot has changed!
