Families across London are being urged to be more physically active as experts fear we face a "national obesity epidemic."

According to figures released by Public Health England (PHE), there are more than 8,600 fast food outlets in London.

In Harrow alone there are 201 fast food outlets, compared with 278 in neighbouring borough, Barnet.

The Greenhill ward has the most with 39 outlets.

PHE also reported that 29.6 per cent of adults in Harrow were achieving less than 30 minutes of physical activity per week in 2015.

Director for Public Health England in London, Dr Yvonne Doyle, said: “More than a fifth of adults and children eat takeaway meals at home more than once a week and we are experiencing a national obesity epidemic. It is particularly worrying that so many of London’s children are affected.

“We are working across London to support families to eat more healthily and be more physically active through campaigns such as Change4Life.

“More than a third of children in London are overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school.”

Dr Doyle added that London councils have plans to tackle childhood obesity, but they are keen for Londoners to tell Public Health England what changes they think are needed to help families.
