A FAILING school has turned its fortunes around thanks to the “ambitious, hard-working and dedicated” children.

Woodside Primary Academy, in Wood Lane, Walthamstow, was put into special measures by Ofsted in 2012 – but has now been branded Outstanding.

Head of school, Jill Rowlings, said she was “disheartened” when joining the school five years ago – but says the new rating is also down to head teacher, Shane Tewes.

Ms Rowlings said: “In all honesty, when I first came here it was failing in all areas.

“That was disappointing for everyone because the teachers have always worked so hard.

“Changes were made under an ambitious headteacher. Parents and pupils were also involved.

“The atmosphere has always been positive here and children have always been happy, but the new grade means they can reach their full potential.

“Pupils are happy and incredibly enthusiastic.”

The Ofsted inspectors noted how pupils with English as a second or third language and those from disadvantaged backgrounds make “exceptional” progress at the school.

Activities offered beyond lessons, including music, sport, outings and talks from visitors were also praised.

In 2015, it was in the top one per cent of schools in the country for the rate of pupil progress, and Year 6 SATS students topped national average results in English and maths.

Ms Rowlings added: “The school will continue to grow and develop now. Everyone here has the same aims and visions for the school.

“We did expect to get this and we are now incredibly proud. We put 150 per cent into this.

“We do everything we can for our pupils to succeed – they are always at the forefront of everything we do.”

Mr Tewes said: “We will of course be continuing to sustain academic improvement by measures which will include extending our assessment system across all subjects, not just the core ones.

“As a vital part of our pupils’ education, we are also intent on increasing our links within the wider community and working with other organisations in the Wood Street area.”
