Britain’s leading artists have dispensed with tradition to bring their next exhibition to Greenwich rather than central London.

The Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) usually solely shows its works at London’s Mall Gallery Trafalgar Square but for throughout September its works will be on display at M1 Fine Art in Nelson Road.

The UK’s most revered group of artists, confined to only around 65 elected members, has been out in force on the streets of Greenwich over the past six months capturing the beauty and historical importance of the borough for the ‘The ROI Paints Greenwich’ exhibition.

M1 Fine Art gallery director Peter McAllister said: “It’s incredibly exciting that over the past six months, members of the most prestigious organisation pertaining to the production of oil paintings have been out in force on the streets of Greenwich, creating works from life.

“We’re thrilled to host them, showing the public the fruits of their labour and are excited about the prospect of doing so - we consider it a great honour.”

The Royal Institute of Oil Painters was founded in 1882 and granted royal status in 1909 with previous members including Alma Tadema, Sickert, Dame Laura Knight, Ann Redpath and Rodin. Its records are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The ROI’s president Ian Cryer said: “With this exhibition, we seek to show the present-day beauty of Greenwich, as well as capturing its historical importance. As ever, we aim to achieve this using the many varied styles all of our artists paint in. Everyone agreed that M1 Fine Art was the perfect venue for the exhibition and we hope every visitor gets as much pleasure from viewing the works as we got from creating them.”

The ‘ROI Paints Greenwich’ runs from September 2 to October 2 at M1 Fine Art in Nelson Road, Greenwich.
