Thousands of students celebrated their A level successes in schools across the borough on Thursday morning.

At Harrow College, overall passes were up significantly on last year to 96 per cent, according to vice principal Dylan McTaggart.

“It’s been a great year, and next year is going to be a cracker,” he said.

Students gaining high A* - B grades were also up 8 per cent from last year, with five students gaining places at the renowned Oxbridge colleges, an achievement which makes the vice principal “insanely proud”.

Mr McTaggart attributes these continued successes to a number of factors, including visits from inspirational figures such as Paralympians and business leaders enabling students to see the “end game” of their labours in the flesh.

“We’re not just a pathway to university though. We’re looking to get our students into work in Harrow. We would love to get them working in and benefitting the local community.”

Harrow College student Nishil Ashoccumar could hardly contain his glee when he first saw his fantastic AAB results. In September he will begin his architecture degree at the University of Kent in Canterbury.

Asked what he was going to do with the rest of his holiday, he admitted: “I think I’m just going to chill out.”

AS student Diana Rafael only moved to the UK from Spain two years ago, but has taken on some tough English-language based subjects at Harrow College, including politics.

She wants to go to university to study law when she finishes her A Levels next year.

“I really like it here – my teachers have been really helpful and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be so interested in politics,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to next year.”

Nower Hill High School principal Chris Livesey said nearly one in three grades achieved at the Pinner school this year was an A or A*.

“We’re proud of all of our students, and we wish them success and happiness in their future studies and careers,” he said.

“The students have produced an excellent achievement, and no doubt they would want to join me in thanking their teachers and other members of staff for all the hard work that has gone into teaching them and preparing them for their examinations.”

Head boy Dilan Patel and head girl Laura Walmsley were two of 21 students to receive As and A*s in all of their subjects.

“I’m so happy, I couldn’t have wished for better results,” said Laura, who will study history of art at York. Dilan will be studying economics at the University of Exeter.

Star pupil Andrew Nelson will study English at Trinity College, Cambridge, after bagging A*s in Classical Civilisation and English Literature, and an A in Music.

Andrew modestly admits: “I’m very happy and didn’t really expect the results I achieved.”

Hatch End High School earned their best ever A Level results this year, with 80 per cent of grades achieved falling in the higher A* - C category.

Head teacher Sue Maguire said: “We are immensely proud of all our young people today who worked so hard to achieve what are outstanding outcomes.

“The results are down to a combined winning ticket of students, staff and parents/carers working together to ensure well-deserved excellence across the board.”

Head boy Jack Measure will be joining other Hatch End alumni at Cambridge University in September to read History after achieving a fantastic 3 A*s in his A Levels.

Another noteworthy accomplishment was that of Adam Silverman who achieved 4 A Levels in Mathematics (A), Media Studies (A), Art (A) and Photography (B). He will be pursuing his long standing career aim of becoming an animator at the prestigious University of the Arts in London, and his achievements and progress were all the more outstanding as he overcame significant obstacles to study during his two years in the sixth form.

Whitmore High School students also attained record results in their A Levels this year, with head teacher Sue Hammond commenting: “I am extremely proud of our students. Their hard work has paid off with a quarter of results awarded grade A*/A and 89 per cent at A* to C.”

Jibril Gudal attained two A*s and two As in his results, and will now head to Oxford University to study Mathematics.

“I’m really proud of what I have achieved. Whitmore is really supportive and the teachers are always ready to provide extra help.  I will remember the many thought-provoking discussions I have had with classmates,” he said.

Sixth Form students at Northwood School celebrated another set of excellent results for the borough. For the third year in a row students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in both A Level and vocational courses.

Head teacher Mark Anderson said: “Yet again we have improved on last year’s set of really strong results.  This has been a fantastic group of students who have worked hard and thoroughly deserve their success.

“They have been supported by our fantastic staff and their caring parents.  I am immensely proud of them.”
