Members of the armed forces were presented with special bracelets symbolising mutual protection at a ceremony marking the Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan.

Personnel from the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force had the “Rakhi” bracelets tied on their wrists by young members of the Hindu community at the Neasden Temple in Kingsbury on Friday.

The tradition of civilians tying Rakhi on to members of the armed forces dates back to the sixth Century.

After the Rakhi ceremony, guests were treated to a dance performance from local Hindu artists.

MOD minister the Rt Hon the Earl Howe said: “The tying of Rakhi to symbolise bonds of mutual protection is a potent symbol for all here today, and one that resonates beyond the Hindu religion to all servicemen and women, whatever their beliefs.”

The festival, organised by the Armed Forces Hindu Network, was the last of a series of events around the country where the long tradition of Hindus in the UK defence forces was celebrated.
