IT has been 60 years since the English football team defeated West Germany in the world cup final – so we are looking back at how Hendon played its part.

The team trained in towns across the county, but one man remembers the effect they had on the people of Hendon, from July 11-30.

Ian McGreevy, a civil engineer, has lived in Mill Hill most of his life, and still remembers the World cup effect from a young age.

Mr McGreevy, 57, said: “I had just turned seven-years-old but I remember, it was an extraordinary time. You could feel the optimism in the air.

“The team stayed at Hendon hall hotel before their final against Germany, and there is still lots of world cup memorabilia there, to this day. It has been said before that the team watched the film ‘Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines’ at the old Hendon cinema.

“I remember hearing how Norbert ‘Nobby’ Stiles used to go to Hendon’s Catholic Church every morning, and the team stayed at Hendon hall hotel in Ashley Lane.

"They also trained in several areas across Hendon, before their matches in Wembley."
