All trains between Purley and Caterham have been cancelled this morning after an engineering train derailed.
Southern Railway tweeted shortly before 5am this morning to warn commuters that all lines would be blocked until further notice between Purley and Caterham. Although they originally tweeted that disruption would continue until 4pm, they have now revised this back to 12pm.
A statement on their website says: "Train services between Purley and Caterham are currently suspended while engineering staff attend to a rail maintenance train which became derailed during overnight works. Disruption expected until 12pm."
Rail replacement buses are running between the two stations, and the 407 bus is accepting train tickets between central Croydon, Purley and Caterham.
Many commuters have taken to social media to express their frustration with Southern.
@SouthernRailUK they've managed to derail a train. How they found one running to derail who knows. They'll try and cover up the detail.

@SouthernRailUK Now you're just making it up, surely - what's next, no trains because of a unicorn on the track? # unbelievable
