A Leytonstone teenager is preparing to follow in his hero’s footsteps after winning a place at the National Youth Theatre.

Buxton School student Tyler Austin, 16, was chosen from around 5,000 applicants for a scholarship to the world-famous drama company.

After a two-week induction in August, he will be put forward for various auditions, including film, television and West End productions.

Tyler was inspired to try out for the NYT after discovering his favourite actor, former Doctor Who star Matt Smith, had also studied there.

He said: "I love Matt Smith. Knowing that he had gone there made me all the more determined to get in.

"There have been so many great actors and actresses that got their start there so you can't help but feel privileged and inspired to be part of it.

The youngster says he “went crazy” when he first discovered he had been accepted to the academy.

Tyler added: "I went crazy, I have to admit. I had my mobile phone in my hand and I just threw it in the air.

"It was just an incredible feeling. They only accept around 500 people out of five thousand who apply so to get in is really a big shock.”

Tyler credited his drama teacher, Donna Palumbi, for inspiring him to pursue his dream of a career in acting.

Ms Palumbi, who also acted with the National Youth Theatre, said: "I was over the moon to hear about Tyler's success with the NYT.

"He's been such an inspiring pupil to teach and he so deserves this. I wish him luck and look forward to hearing of his future triumphs."
