A mosque has issued a statement of support for the Turkish community after the Istanbul airport bombing.

At least 41 people are confirmed to have been killed by a terrorist attack on Ataturk airport, which the government of Turkey is blaming on Muslim extremist group ISIS.

Palmers Green Mosque have said they reject the actions of the people involved, which has happened during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

In the statement from the mosque’s board of trustees supporting the large Turkish community in Enfield, they say: “The Muslim community stands for freedom, peace, and the ability to live our daily lives without fear.

“In this sacred month of seeking forgiveness and garnering unity, this attack again demonstrates how terrorists are far from where the majority of the Muslim world stands and have no regard for our core belief of maintaining peace and not causing unrest in the world.

“Their enemy is all of humanity who do not share their warped world view and we stand united against this view and their actions.

“We are proud to say we are truly a multicultural, multi ethnic mosque. Our Turkish brothers and sisters are at the forefront of our minds as we stand with them and all victims of such attacks across the world.

“Our prayers are with the departed and the families left behind and with the brave people who helped without regard for their own safety. Their brave actions show clearly what makes us human: the need to help others and to support goodness over the evil.

“We will not let the terrorists win by dividing us.”

The attacks have also been condemned by the Turkish community, with the board of the Turkish Cypriot Community Association, which works in Enfield and Haringey, saying the atrocities “deeply sadden us”.

Their statement says: “As a charity and community centre serving the Turkish speaking people of London, we utterly condemn any acts of terrorism.

“This is terrible and gutless act that has caused many fatalities and casualties. The effects of an attack that took a few minutes will be long lasting and will be engraved in the memories of the victims’, and the world as a whole. At this sad time, our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones and hope that in time they will find solace.”
