LONDON’S oldest brass band has taken home the gold in a national contest held at the weekend.

Enfield Brass Band won first prize in their category at three of the villages in the annual Whit Friday contest held in Lancashire.

Band secretary and bass trombone player Alex Gould said the 26-piece band had worked hard to be able to enjoy the competition.

He said: “We really just enjoy it, it’s a great laugh.”

He said villages involved in the contest loved to see the bands perform through their streets.

Mr Gould said: “People are thrilled it’s not a dying art. The sound of a band playing at full pelt – we can shake the windows, it’s an amazing sound to hear.”

The national contest, which has run since 1884, saw more than 100 bands compete to win at different villages in the Lancashire Hills.

The contest is often described as the FA cup of the brass band world as bands of different abilities all compete against each other to wow the crowds and impress the judges with their performances.

Enfield didn't fail to disappoint and both the bands march through each of the villages and the performances to the judge were well received.

But the band is already looking towards its next performances and is due to perform at Bayford Open Gardens on June 19.
