People across Enfield have been voting on who will become the next Mayor of London.

Polling stations opened early on Thursday morning across the borough, including at the Dugdale Centre in Enfield Town.

The Enfield Independent spoke to several voters on who they had given their cross to, with some sticking with their lifelong choices and others going for something new.

Ruth Ellis, of Cecil Road, Enfield, voted for Labour candidate Sadiq Khan as her first choice, and selected Sophie Walker of the Women’s Equality Party as her second preference.

Ms Ellis said: “I have always voted Labour, although I am less keen at the moment with everything going on with Corbyn and Livingstone, the party is the one that always puts people first.

“I think Women’s Equality is a really good initiative, we will see if it works in practice.”

While Ms Ellis was behind the left leaning parties, others were firmly in the Zac Goldsmith camp.

Patricia Elston of Enfield Town voted Conservative on all three papers – Mayor, local GLA and city wide GLA – as she has done for 50 years.

She said: “They are always the best party for Enfield, and I didn’t choose a second choice on the mayoral ballot as I am committed, there is no-one else I would choose.”

Another Enfield voter, Betty Curati, added: “I voted Conservative. They are clearly the best party for London.”

However Terry Ryan, who described himself as a life-long Tory, voted for UKIP candidate Peter Whittle.

He said: “I don’t believe in the other parties any more, they have let us down.”
