Londoners have gone to the polls today as the capital gets set to elect a new mayor and 25 new assembly members.

Polling for the Greater London Authority elections opened at 7am this morning (Thursday, May 5) and will close at 10pm.

Voters will be asked to choose their first and second preferences for London mayor and two types of assembly member- a constituency representative and a London-wide candidate.

Frontrunners in the battle to become the city’s new mayor have already appeared at polling stations this morning to cast their votes.

Labour candidate Sadiq Khan will be hoping he is able to take back City Hall after eight years of Tory rule.

Conservative Zac Goldsmith meanwhile has tried to seize on the anti-Semitism controversy engulfing Labour in a bid to boost his chances after trailing in the polls.

The eventual winner will replace outgoing mayor Boris Johnson, who has served in the post since 2008.

Londoners will be presented with three coloured ballot papers- pink for the mayoral election, yellow to for constituency assembly members and orange for a London-wide candidates.
