A Year Six pupil from a Wandsworth private school has taken top honours at this year’s Fourth Plinth School Awards with an innovative metal sculpture.

Jacob Martin, from Finton House School, Trinity Road, was the overall winner of the 8-11 age group with his metal sculpture called ‘Cutting Edge’ beating students from all across London to the prize, on Thursday, April 28, writes Matt Urquhart.

Classmate Tom Penniceard also received an award as borough prize winner for his art piece, ‘Moving Time’, a concept drawing of the inner workings of a clock.

Headteacher of Finton House School, Ben Freeman, said: “We are absolutely delighted for the boys’ success. Both Jacob and Tom have always enjoyed art and we are very lucky to have such a great arts centre and teacher.

“We are about to begin a refurbishment of the art rooms in the summer holidays so we are hoping to build on this success next year.”

The Fourth Plinth School Awards is an annual competition open to all primary and secondary schools in the capital for students aged between five-15 and is organised by the Mayor of London in partnership with art supplies retailer, Cass Art.

Pupils are encouraged to create art work, inspired by the contemporary art commissions for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Director of programme at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and competition judge, Clare Lilley, said: "Judging the Fourth Plinth Schools Award was hugely enjoyable and the stories that seemed to unravel from a sweep of young people were quite remarkable.

"Ranging from instinctive aesthetic responses to carefully researched projects, the drawings, paintings, collages and models demonstrated the wonderful creativity and energy of the children as well as their fantastic teachers. So good, we were forced to invent new categories for prizes."

The boys’ artwork will be displayed in an exhibition at City Hall which includes the top prize winners in three age categories and the best entry from each London borough.

It is free to visit and runs from April 29-July 7.
