Details of the horrors in the kitchens of the lowest rated cafes and restaurants in Wandsworth have been revealed through reports from the borough's inspectors.

In February, the Wandsworth Guardian reported that 15 restaurants had been given the lowest possible rating from their hygiene inspection, and since then, the newspaper has seen the reasons why through a Freedom of Information request, writes Dan Stables.

At Ali Baba, a Lebanese restaurant on Trinity Road, there was a fruit fly infestation in the kitchen and the restaurant has been told they must develop an allergen matrix for the menu.

The extraction system was "so greasy that it now presents a risk of fire", and staff were ordered to improve their standard of cleaning and to stop storing bicycles in the kitchen.

China Boulevard on Smuggler’s Way was marked ‘unsatisfactory’ in every one of the criteria.

The report found that the standard of cleaning was "appalling"; there was no sanitizer in use to disinfect surfaces and areas; and the walk in chiller was in "a filthy and contaminated condition".

Desi Khana on Tooting High Street was also deemed ‘unsatisfactory’ in every one of the criteria.

Garratt Lane News Ltd in Tooting has been ordered to implement pest control measures immediately to eradicate an "active rodent infestation" after two packets of hobnob biscuits were found to have been chewed by mice.

They were also told to "clean shelves and display areas of [the] shop to remove rodent droppings and dirt".

Also in Garratt Lane, Major’s Chicken and Kebab were another restaurant deemed unsatisfactory in every department.

Mouse droppings were found on shelves and in a bag of rice, and cabbage was found being stored in contact with raw chicken.

There was also no soap at the wash basin for staff to wash their hands.

Marmaris, also on Garratt Lane, was another restaurant where evidence of mouse droppings was found.

At My Daily Fresh on Upper Tooting Road, cockroaches were found below the sinks and mouse droppings behind the freezer.

The report urged that all areas of the premises were thoroughly disinfected, but did acknowledge that "cleaning was progressing".

Oma’s Kitchen on Tooting High Street were ordered to improve their cleaning throughout the whole unit and make sure food is properly refrigerated.

Poundland in the Southside Shopping Centre was ordered to remove food items that had been "damaged and contaminated by rodent activity".

Punjab Superstore, on Garratt Lane, was found to have "vegetables stored on [the] floor in [the] chiller near hanging meat with blood dripping".

At The Battersea Quarter in Plantation Wharf, "an active rodent infestation causing health risks [is] present throughout the food areas" with gnawed food and droppings found on food.

Pest entry points and a "lack of hand washing prior to handling ready to eat foods" were noted at Rooster Spot on Balham High Road.

At Wandsworth Grill on Merton Road, "mouse droppings were evident in many areas of the store room".

Curries were also found to be being stored at 11°C – these kinds of foods should be stored at 8°C or lower to prevent the growth of bacteria.

Poor hygiene was observed at Wok Express on Putney High Street.

A chef was observed cutting raw chicken without washing their hands before or afterwards, and only using a dirty towel to clean them.

At the Mexican-inspired Zocalo in Battersea Square, "high risk products such as meat [were] found above 8°C".
