News Shopper reporter Samantha Payne gives her impressions of Great War Display aircraft display this morning.

The display was a great step back in time for the nostalgic and novices.

Fire shooting sound effects were heard while the SE5 Spitfires roamed the skies and impressed the crowds.

Commentators said out of 26,000 allied pilots who fought, at least 16,000 died in battle. They flew at 15,000ft and 20,000ft without oxygen.

The SE5 141 Squadron was based at Biggin Hill in 1918.

The Spitfire planes, which had two machine guns, had rotary engines which were rolled by propellers.

Most of the teenage pilots had only 10 hours of flying under their belts, which was deemed back then as being qualified.

Pilots were known as 20 minuters - that was their life expectancy.
