A RAILWAY project featuring stations in North London could be delayed as the government looks to save £4 billion.

The National Infrastructure Commission released a report on Thursday in which chairman Lord Adonis suggested ways to “reduce costs” for the Crossrail 2 route.

The report mentioned delaying the proposed line to Wood Green and New Southgate, which is expected to run from central London either through Alexandra Palace Station and Turnpike Lane Station or Wood Green Station.

A delay was recommended with the aim of reducing the cost of building Crossrail 2 in the 2020s by £4 billion.

The report said: “Given its high costs, the commission believes there may be a strong case for deferring the delivery of this branch until a later phase.

“This would reduce the costs of the initial scheme by over £4 billion, reflecting the fact that some facilities currently provided by the New Southgate branch would need to be moved elsewhere to enable the first phase to operate.”

Haringey Liberal Democrats said they were “disappointed” the plans for the Crossrail 2 branch were facing change.

Cllr Gail Engert, Haringey Lib Dem leader, said: “The Lib Dems support Crossrail 2 and want to see Crossrail Stations at Turnpike Lane and Alexandra Palace as soon as possible.

“We are disappointed that Lord Adonis has recommended delaying the local Crossrail 2 branch.”

She added the Labour-run council will need to provide an alternative plan if there is a delay.

She said: “They must provide an alternative plan in case the local Crossrail 2 branch is delayed, as recommended by Lord Adonis.”

The council responded they did not want see a postponement in the route.

Cllr Claire Kober, leader of Haringey Council said, “Any delay to Crossrail 2 would threaten London’s economic growth and have a huge impact on people who live and work in North London.

“It’s a false economy, rather than saving money it is likely to come at a huge cost for London stifling job creation and hurting business.

“So I urge the government and Mayor of London to get Crossrail 2 delivered without any delay.”
