A total of £20,000 has been pledged to improve parking for residents who are struggling to park near their homes.

They say it is becoming increasingly difficult to park in Armstrong Avenue, Woodford Green near Highams Park, since two new housing developments were built in the last few years.

In response, Waltham Forest council has put aside £20,000 to formalise partial footway parking or some ‘all four wheels’ parking.

It will convert some narrow grassed sections to pathways to compensate.

Chingford and Woodford Green Conservative MP Iain Duncan Smith visited the road on Friday (February 5).

He said pavement parking places would improve access for refuse vehicles and help to prevent missed collections.

He said: “I have campaigned against overdevelopment in this area and it means car parking is a nightmare.

“This cash will go some way to helping this, but I will be monitoring the situation.”

People living in the road said that while the council’s allocation of funding is good news it may not be enough.

Mother Eyvett Sergent, 39, said: “I welcome the funding but more could be done.

“You can’t drive down here when schools open and close and it is an accident waiting to happen.”

Taxi driver Peter Horlock, 50, has lived in the road for 17 years.

He said: “I get back home at 1am most nights and there is nowhere to park.

“I don’t think £20,000 is enough, this council does not care about parking expects everyone to have pushbikes.”

Deputy leader of Waltham Forest council, Labour councillor Clyde Loakes, said: “We will have detailed designs shortly and have managed to secure the funding for Armstrong Avenue through monies leveraged from new developments in the local area.”

A layout design is due this month with construction to take place in May at the earliest.
