And, as is to be expected when these huge US entertainment juggernauts roll into town, the evening wasn’t short on razzmatazz in the moments when the players weren’t battling it out on the court.

From Katherine Jenkins singing the national anthem to acrobatic slam dunk demonstrations, cheerleaders, dancing mascots, a parade of NBA legends and opportunities for fans to win prizes; the event packed in plenty to please the crowd who eagerly snapped up the tickets within an hour of them going on sale.

Hollywood actor Michael B Jordan – star of the new Rocky movie, Creed – sat courtside, as did the likes of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, Jake Roche of band Rixton, his girlfriend Jesy Nelson of Little Mix, her bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock and X Factor runner-up Fleur East.

Arsenal stars Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Callum Chambers were in attendance, as were Chelsea stars including Eden Hazard. Icons of the sport, Robert Pires and Didier Drogba were also courtside.

Speaking before the game, NBA commissioner Adam Silver described the annual fixture in Greenwich as being like the league’s famous All-Star match.

He said: “I'd say in terms of being here in London, one of my colleagues said to me a little while ago that this has become almost like a European All‑Star Game in that it’s similar to All‑Star where it's a gathering place for the larger NBA family and for sports executives from throughout the industry.

“That's what this game has become in London.  In essence, it's become a fixture on the sports calendar, especially here in Europe, and it's an opportune time for us to see friendly faces, business partners, people who have been around the game of basketball for a long time will all gather for this game.

“In addition, if you look courtside tonight, you'll see a bevy of celebrities, footballers, others, who come to share in the NBA experience.”
