A GOVERNMENT review will look into the challenges people face with out-of-hours coroner services.
The issue was raised in Parliament yesterday (January 7) by Hendon MP Matthew Offord.
The Conservative politician said two constituents – one Muslim and one Jewish – had contacted him over Christmas about problems they had with the service.
He explained how people of those religions need a death certificate within 24 hours, in order to comply with their religious beliefs and to dispose of the body.
Mr Offord said: “Could a Minister come to the Dispatch Box and explain how the Government are ensuring that a 24-hour coroners service is available to everyone across the whole of the United Kingdom?”
In response, Chris Grayling, Leader of the House of Commons, said: “I am well aware of the issues and some of the challenges, particularly those faced by some of the communities who live in north London.
“The issue is now subject to review by the Ministry of Justice, and I hope it will suggest ideas to improve the situation.”
