A group of children have won a city-wide rocket building competition.

The ‘BV Winton Explorers’ from Winton Avenue, Bounds Green, won judges over in the London Play Space Challenge with their rocket, complete with soft toy astronauts and a specially made nose cone.

Charity London Play ran the challenge, which was open to teams of up to 10 children, aged between 5 and 16 years old. They had to create their own fantasy spaceships out of recycled materials. Teams of children from play groups, community groups and schools were invited, using whatever materials they could get their hands on, to create space ships, rockets and space stations.

The Explorers’ prize is to be special VIP guests at The London Model Engineering Exhibition at Alexandra Palace. They will be there from noon on Saturday 16 January to build a giant star trek themed mosaic in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the cult television series.

Exhibition Manager Avril Spence said: “The competition has been a fun way for the children to design, construct, and problem solve and work together as a team. The competition enables disadvantaged children that are living locally a free, fun and educational day out with their carers in a safe environment.”
