VOLUNTEERS from synagogues in Barnet and Haringey put their culinary skills to good use to help homeless shelters.

Around 80 members of Barnet, Cockfosters and N Southgate, Mill Hill and Muswell Hill United Synagogues took part in cooking sessions for Project Chesed, in partnership with Tikun, during the past week.

Once the meals had been cooked, volunteers took them to No Second Night Out, an organisation which aims to help people sleeping rough in central London.

Barnet and Mill Hill also hosted Rabbi Yosef Solomon of Tikun, who discussed the importance of volunteering.

Miriam Marson, who co-ordinated the event at Barnet US, said: “Three generations spanning seventy five years came together to cook for the homeless. It was both great fun and more importantly a mitzvah and a very worthwhile think to do.

“We're already looking forward to doing it again.”

Michelle Minsky, Head of US Chesed, said: ‘This is such a wonderful project as people from all ages are able to come together to have fun and perform acts of Chesed for people who really need it.

“It also provided a platform for our amazing volunteers to learn about the underlying values of Chesed, with some committing to do so on a more regular basis’.
