A netball club that has risen in six years from being founded to being the best in the county is aiming to raise money to take their club global.

Six years ago, AP Saints Netball Club was formed from six girls from St James School in Muswell Hill. Now 200 girls from 44 different schools are playing for the club.

These girls also represent Middlesex in the London and South East Regional League, and two have trained with the England under-19s squad.

They are now trying to raise money to travel to Jamaica, where they will spread awareness of Haringey sport. They also plan to play in Kingston against the Jamaica U16 National Squad – no easy task, given Jamaica won bronze in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Alison Akinrinlola, coach of AP Saints and former England player, said: “The girls are amazing, unstoppable. They have gone from small and self-conscious girls to strong, confident women. They have exceeded all expectations.

“They have done a lot of travelling in the past, playing in Paris and all over the UK, but never something like this.

“We held a Christmas Fair last Saturday and raised around £1,200. However we want to take a squad of 16 girls and it costs £1,600 a head for travel, accommodation and everything. There is a long way to go.

“All the girls going are very excited. Sport has made them very competitive, and I think that it has helped them destress and do better in their academics. They have built the netball into their daily timetable. All the other girls are helping them fundraise too – the younger players want that chance too when they are 16.

“We just want to get better and better, and raise more and more awareness in Muswell Hill that they have got this fantastic club on their doorstep.”

The trip is planned for next year in October 2016, when the girls who were the inspiration to start AP Saints will travel to Jamaica after sitting their GCSEs in the summer. The current under-16 squad, who plan to go to Kingston, started the club as the first team as 10-year-olds.

The players hail from a range of Haringey schools, including Fortismere School, Channing School, Highgate School, Hornsey School for Girls, and Grieg City Academy.

Ms Akinrinlola said that fundraising events will be held throughout the next year, and they are also hoping for support from sports clubs and school foundations, including the Tottenham Grammar School Fund.
