DJ announcements asking about 1,600 clubbers to leave contributed to the death of a Kingston University student who was crushed in a Northampton nightclub four years ago, a jury has ruled.

Second year psychology student Laurene-Danielle Jackson, 19, died after a crowd surge at the Lava and Ignite nightclub on October 19, 2011.

Hundreds of students had been bussed into the city for the Wickedest Wickedest student night that left the teenager, known fondly as Tiffany, in hospital for about three weeks before she died on November 6, 2011.

The two-week long inquest held at Northampton County Hall into her death, and that of Nabila Nanfuka, 22, who also died in the crush, finished on Monday, November 16.

Clubbers rushed to leave after 14 announcements by the DJ

The jury found that 14 DJ announcements made over 30 minutes telling clubbers to get to their coaches along with poor cloakroom management caused the rush that ultimately resulted in the girls’ deaths.

Both Miss Jackson, from Wembley, and Miss Nanfuka from Neasden, were found unconscious in the club and 28 other clubbers were also hurt in the crush.

The cause of death recorded for Miss Jackson was cerebral ischemia, a lack of blood flow to the brain, and traumatic asphyxia.

Miss Nanfuka’s cause of death was recorded as traumatic asphyxia.

No criminal charges against anyone or any company have ever been brought in connection to the crush.
