The launch of a much-discussed and debated recycling plan for Kingston is due to begin in January 2016.

The new plan includes a rotation of items being collections weekly – although food waste will be picked up every seven days.

The scheme originally due to start at the end of this year, has promised to make £4.2m of savings over seven years, and was voted through by councillors this year.

The changes will mainly affect the collection service for houses.

For those who live in flats, the change will be less apparent with new routes and collection day changes.

What is staying the same?

  •  Food waste will still be collected every week in the brown caddy bin.
  •  For houses with landfill waste, the collection will still be every fortnight from the black wheelie bins.

What will change?

  • A new wheelie bin with a blue lid will be given to households. This will be for paper card and Tetra Pak cartons and will be emptied every fortnight on the same day as landfill waste.
  • The green recycling boxes already given to households for tin, glass and plastics will be collected every fortnight. If more than one green box is needed, residents can order more on the council website.
  •  One week will see landfill waste, the blue-lidded wheelie bin and the brown food caddy collected, the next week will see the green recycling boxes and the brown food caddy, again, collected.
  • This way, every week there will be a collection on a rotation system, so the majority of the boxes and bins will not all be empty at the same time.
