Masked bikers roared across Brockley’s Hilly Fields launching fireworks into the sky during a hair-raising Halloween rampage through south London.

Hundreds of riders tore through the streets of Bromley, Lewisham and Greenwich on Saturday night (October 31) with some comparing it to scenes from Mad Max Fury Road.

Organisers arranged the eight-mile rideout from Lambeth to Bromley on social media in protest against the lack of legal space available for stunt bikers.

Residents have complained riders mounted pavements in residential streets, caused traffic chaos and terrified children who were out trick or treating with their parents.

Theo Harrison had been watching rugby at his friend’s house close to Hilly Fields when he heard the roar of the bikes approaching.

The 24-year-old, a digital content editor at a charity, told News Shopper: “It got louder and louder.

“They were mounting the pavements to get into the park. We went out to see what was going on.”

Mr Harrison captured video footage of the bikers riding across the park as they let off fireworks.

He added: “There were at least 200 motorcycles and all sorts of different vehicles – quadbikes and mopeds all congregating. The crowd got bigger and bigger.

“It gradually got more and more hectic.

“There was nothing that the police could do really. It was pretty mad.

“I can understand what it means to them [the bikers] but there were lots of kids around trick or treating. It was a huge shame for the little kids and families.”

Lionel Stanhope, who has lived in Brockley for 13 years, was attending a private function at the Hilly Fields café when he saw bikers gathering at the park.

The 47-year-old scenic artist, who also captured video, said: “We saw lots of headlights and the sounds of the motorbikes coming from all directions.

“The café is quite central – groups of motorbikes all sort of gathered together. They did let off fireworks.

“It was quite a spectacle to be honest.

“The noise and the lights was quite exciting for the kids.

“They did drive past the café very respectfully but the park got quite damaged.

“Being local, I have seen mopeds riding along the park before and it is a bit of a nuisance.

“It does annoy local residents.”

Hundreds of people, who witnessed bikers haring along the roads, took to social media to share what they had seen.

Shoobs wrote: “What's happening with the hundreds of motorbikes and quad bikes in SE London?! #ForestHill.”

Daniel Trilling said: “Hundreds of masked people riding motorbikes and quad bikes en masse over south London roads and pavements. Had to jump out of their way.”

Transpontine also tweeted: “Wow hundreds of motorbikes driving around New Cross/Telegraph Hill like a motorised critical mass."

Another Twitter user known as Phil said: “Hundreds of motorbikes and quad bikes terrorising Croydon #MadMax.”

Sean Cavill said: “Wtf is happening in Hither Green, about 300+ motorbikes just rode past us. Was like scene from Mad Max! #lewisham #hithergreen.”

POLICE UPDATE:

Police are now appealing for information and mobile phone footage of the bikers and have confirmed one person was arrested.

Part of the group attended the Apple Green Petrol Station in Streatham High Road at around 8.30pm, making off without paying for fuel and stealing confectionary from the shop.

Officers arrived and arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of making off without payment and driving not in accordance with a licence.

He has now been bailed to a date in mid-November.

Police say the group were dispersed between around midnight and 1am on November 1, largely from the Croydon and Bromley areas.

No other arrests have been made.

Superintendent Liam Harrington said: "This group behaved in an utterly reckless manner, committing criminal damage and endangering themselves, other road users and pedestrians.

"Although there have been no reported injuries, my officers are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the offences committed and work to bring those involved to justice.

"If anyone knows the identity of those involved or has footage of riders with their faces or registration numbers visible, then I would urge them to share that information and material with us."

Anyone with information which can assist the investigation is asked to call police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or via https://crimestoppers-uk.org/.
