Campaigners are hoping a pub will be restored to its former glory after it was declared an asset of community value.

The Price pub, on Bounds Green Road, was given the status following a campaign by local residents to preserve its future.

Members of the Bowes and Bounds community website secured the status which means the building cannot be demolished or change use without permission from the local authority.

In addition, if the status was to change, members of the community would have six months to come up with an alternative or even bid for the site.

Richard Matz, of Partridge Way, in Bowes Park, who lives just yards from the pub, led the campaign and heralded the latest news.

He said: “The interest from locals in protecting the building shows that, with the right management, The Prince could be a thriving community pub once again.

“The long bar has great future community potential as a venue for live music, comedy, theatre, wedding functions and private hire. As one supporter of this application put it “sometimes only a pub will do”.

The pub was given the status by Haringey council.

Formerly known as The Prince of Wales, the pub was built to complement the needs of Wood Green’s original Victorian shopping city.

In recent years the pub has a somewhat troubled history; recent underdevelopment of The Prince of Wales pub has detracted from its earlier history - and future potential - as a place of community significance.

Cllr Ali Demirci said: "All three Bounds Green Councillors welcome the wonderful news that the Prince Pub has been successfully classified as an Asset of Community value. The success of this application is a testament to the local community's hard work in protecting our local architectural heritage for continued social and recreational use".
