A woman hanging from Kingston Bridge was pulled to safety by police and firefighters.

Kingston police and the London Fire Brigade "saved the life" of the woman after she was seen on the bridge over the River Thames just before 7.30pm on October 28.

Crews from Kingston and Surbiton were at another call, a fire alarm, nearby, when someone told them there was a woman, thought to be in her 20s, on the bridge.

Dave Young, from Kingston fire station, said: "The watch manager from Surbiton, Ray Grinrod, was talking to her.

"She was hanging on by her fingertips and they grabbed her and pulled her over.

"The watch manager said 'she's going, she's going', and they grabbed her."

He added: "It was very lucky [we were in the area]."

PC Fab Ahmed from Kingston police had seen the woman sitting on a ledge on the wrong side of the bridge.

She decided to jump, but PC Ahmed reached over and took hold of her. The force of the woman falling pulled the officer over the balustrades and down towards the river.

Wearing two stone of police equipment and not being a very strong swimmer, PC Ahmed said: "I knew at this point I was heading for the river, I was running through in my head what I was going to do next.

"I knew I had a major fight on my hands to stay alive and do my best to help the lady when we both hit the water."

Luckily, watch commander Ginrod and two of PC Ahmed's colleagues grabbed his ankles and was hauled back over to safety with the woman.
