Just over a year ago two schools considered expanding to create more places, now both have submitted planning applications to do just that.

Alexandra Infant School and St Paul's Church of England Junior School want to extend their school buildings to take on more children.

Two years ago Alexandra took on a 'bulge' class in reception to help with the borough's increasing school place demands.

The need for more primary school places in the borough is still apparent.

St Paul's wants to build a single storey building which would provide 60 additional places.

Alexandra wants to build a two-storey extension to the current school for six more classrooms. This would mean knocking down an existing single-storey central part of the building in Alexandra Road.

There are no suggestions of how many extra school places this could create in the planning application, but previous documents have suggested an extra 90.

If approved, both schools would be able to jointly take children from age four to 11. St Paul’s currently only takes children from year 3 to year 6. Meanwhile Alexandra takes children from nursery up to year 3.

When the proposals were made to expand and increase the number of year groups earlier this year, a spokesman for Kingston Council had said: "The proposals, which both schools support, would create a fourth form of reception entry between the two schools and give north Kingston parents more choice when their children are due to start primary school.

"They would also enable both schools to carve out separate, distinct identities as all-through primary schools, in line with all the other state-funded schools in the north Kingston area."

The closing date for comments on both applications is November 2.

A target date for the council decision is set for December 1.
