A CAMPAIGN to restore a bus ‘countdown’ sign has been successful after a ‘bizarre’ decision to remove it.

Nearly 4,000 people board northbound buses from Walthamstow Market every day, previously using a digital sign to tell them when the next service was due.

However, during works to merge two stops it was removed.

Jennette Arnold OBE said this Transport for London was then failing to provide passengers with adequate travel information as a result.

TfL then said it would not replace it, prompting a ‘lengthy’ campaign from Mrs Arnold.

She wrote to the Transport Commissioner for London, outlining the importance of the countdown sign for local residents.

Last week, the commissioner replied to say that work was already under way to prepare the existing shelter for the installation.

Labour London Assembly Member for Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest, Jennette Arnold OBE AM said: “Residents of Waltham Forest were dismayed to discover that the very busy northbound bus stop at Walthamstow Market lost its bus countdown after TfL carried out works on the site.

“I was disappointed that TfL refused to replace the countdown when I first raised it, despite the fact that thousands of local people rely on taking the bus from there every single day.

“It was a bizarre decision to remove the countdown in the first place but I am now pleased that at the end of the long campaign TfL have agreed to replace the sign and give back to Waltham Forest residents the safety and reassurance that they provide.”
