Southeastern is removing first class seats from a third of its trains, to make room for more standard seats.

Some 735 extra standard seats will be provided from the changes - eight per four-carriage train.

First class compartments, currently at the front and rear of each train, will be moved to the central carriages.

The first "upgraded" train is due back in service at the end of October.

Trains will also be re-painted with new carpets, lino, replacement windows if needed, and dry cleaned seats.

Engineering director Mark Johnson said: "We have already started a major refit of these trains and moving the first class seating at this time allows us to find much needed extra capacity across our fleet.

"This is important as every seat counts and we are doing all within our power to increase capacity."
