An eternally young great grandmother-of-six who has lived in Bexley in 105 years and says "laughing and farting keep her young" celebrated a big birthday on Tuesday (October 6).

Erith resident Gertrude Howard, who still lives independently and does her own cooking and washing at the age of 105, celebrated in Crayford surrounded by family.

The wine, sherry and Baileys fan, who reads 12 books a month thanks to the mobile library, lived in Barnhurst for 64 years before moving to Erith.

It was a busy week for Mrs Howard - with her grandson's wedding tomorrow and son Les Howard's 43rd wedding anniversary to wife Linda yesterday.

Mr Howard said: "She lives in Erith and I'm sure she must be one or even the oldest person in the Bexley Borough who still looks after herself in her own home.

"She truly is a remarkable lady.

TODAY'S TOP STORIES:

"She puts her good health and longevity down to laughing every day, and always looking on the positive side of everything."

Mrs Howard celebrated her big day at Vintage Lindy Lou's tea shop in Crayford with her three children.

She thinks she may be the oldest person in the Bexley borough, still living on her own. Do you know someone equally impressive? Email josie.griffiths@london.newsquest.co.uk
