Sutton Council is considering taking enforcement action against Cheam Food Centre, in London Road, which failed to improve after it was given a zero health rating.

Cheam Food Centre had been named as one of the UK's dirtiest supermarkets.

Sutton Council had said it was working closely with the supermarket to improve hygiene standards after it was slapped with the zero rating in July 2014.

But a follow-up inspection published last month gave Cheam Food Centre the lowest rating despite Sutton Council's efforts.

A Sutton Council spokesman said: "Following the recent food hygiene inspection, the director of Cheam Food Centre is co-operating with the environmental health food team in taking any remedial action that was specified in the inspection report.

"After their previous inspection, we had spent three months working with the owners to improve the business's management procedures and hygiene standards.

"We are disappointed that despite these efforts, a year later the standards have dropped again.

"As a result, we are considering taking enforcement action against the business."
