A grandmother celebrated her 90th birthday by driving a Ferrari around the Top Gear test track to raise money for charity.

Pat Farr, of Alverstone Road, New Malden took to the track at Dunsfold Aerodrome near Guildford to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

The petrolhead grandmother, who turns 90 in November, even got a mention on new Top Gear host Chris Evans’ radio show.

She said: ""My grandchildren just said they were going to arrange for me to drive a Ferrari and I thought game on.

"I’ve been on a high ever since, it was a wonderful little drive and a wonderful experience."

So far Mrs Farr has raised almost £2,000 for the charity, which she chose as both her brother and sister have been diagnosed with cancer.

She added: "It was payback time in my view. I don’t know one family that hasn’t been affected by cancer.

"Just doing a thing like that can raise money to fight this horrible disease. I’m so grateful for everything everyone has given."

Having hit speeds of 80mph on her own, she then stepped into the Ferrari with a professional racing driver, who drove her round at over 140mph.

The fundraiser was organised as a birthday gift from her family, who watched on when she completed the drive on September 19.

Daughter Gill Mott said: "She just grabbed the opportunity with both hands and the fact that we were there just made her enjoy it so much more.

"The fact’s she’s in good health and has led a good life, she just wants to raise as much money as possible."
