PCSOs have been given a stay of execution after a decision on cuts was postponed due to vast opposition.

All 1,000 Police Community Support Officers in the capital could be axed as the Metropolitan Police try to make £800 million of savings by 2019.

According to the latest Metropolitan Police data, there are currently 28 PSCOs in Harrow, all of whom could all face the axe if these plans go ahead.

Despite a discussion being scheduled for the Met’s Management Board meeting on Tuesday, September 29, it is believed the Met has pushed back the decision until December after significant political and public opposition to the plans.

But Labour London Assembly Member for Harrow and Brent Navin Shah has warned that the future of policing in the capital remained at “grave risk.” He said: “I welcome that the Met is taking the time to listen to the vast public opposition to the proposed cuts to all PCSOs in London.

“Despite this stay of execution for PCSOs its clear the future of local policing in the capital remains at grave risk.

“We cannot be complacent and will be spending the next two months making the case for neighbourhood policing in the capital.

“There is no doubt that Government cuts are putting great strain on the police force, it’s time the Home Secretary understood that the decimation of neighbourhood policing is not a price the London public are willing to pay.

“I’m concerned that the commitment and good work by Harrow’s police will be undermined by the cuts to PCSOs leaving all local areas without neighbourhood police. The current stay of execution is not good enough.”

The cuts would come on top of previous reductions in PCSO numbers with 82 or 74 per cent lost from Harrow’s streets since May 2010.

The delay comes only a week after the Commissioner warned that the scale of police funding cuts were “worrying” for the capital saying that “we’ve got options on how to make savings but with that scale of savings none of them are attractive.”
