Glamping is to join animals, sealife and a theme park in the list of attractions for Chessington World of Adventures.

For a five-year period until September 2020, the field near the Wild Asia section will contain tents fit for glamorous camping.

The park was granted planning permission for the 35 tents, washing and toilet facilities, on September 7, with glamping accommodation due to open next May.

Merlin Entertainments, which runs the park, has already set up a glamping site at Warwick Castle which has proved popular.

A forum discussing all-things theme parks had largely positive comments from users about Chessington World of Adventures’ plans.

One user said: “This actually sounds like a very good idea for the park, considering it’s not just a theme park and has a zoo side and likes to use the word explorer.”

But another felt the addition would be unnecessary and said: “I don’t feel that the theme park has developed enough to justify a new accommodation site.”

The tents will be in place from May 1 to October 31 each year with the buildings for storage, security and washing facilities remaining all year round for the five years.

A spokesman for the park said it would be “perfect for those who want to indulge their adventurous side without compromising life’s simple pleasures”.

He added the new glamping accommodation would turn a family sleepover into an “exciting outdoor experience”.
