Classmates and relatives are mourning the loss of a ten-year-old boy who died after being involved in a collision with a car on Saturday.

Tommy Kenny was crossing Brook Road, at the junction with Stratfield Road, when the incident, involving a Volvo Estate 850, driven by a 24-year-old Borehamwood man, happened. Tommy was taken to Barnet Hospital but died later that evening.

Since then, dozens of tributes have been left on the railings in Brook Road for the schoolboy.

Tommy's grandfather, Tony Kenny, said: "Tommy was a popular and happy lad who loved life. He particularly enjoyed football and was a keen supporter of Liverpool, and he also loved computer games. As a family, we're devastated by this tragedy."

As well as flowers and toys, a football shirt signed by friends and family, Liverpool scarves and the lyrics of You'll Never Walk Alone, the Liverpool Football Anthem, adorn the road where the incident happened. Family members have also been keeping candles lit under smiling pictures of Tommy, in tribute.

One of the messages left at the scene reads: "A precious little boy taken from us and placed in the arms of the angels. God bless Tommy, you will always be in our thoughts."

Students at Monksmead School, in Hillside Avenue, where Tommy was a pupil, held an assembly on Monday as a memorial and to help children cope with Tommy's death.

On Monday, his Year 5 class released 32 red and white balloons, to which messages had been attached. The class also wrote a book for Tommy, which they presented to his mother this week.

Headteacher Lorraine Fairbank said: "Tommy was a delightful pupil who had a keen sense of humour. He will be sorely missed by all of us.

Our heartfelt sympathies are with Tommy's family."

Police are investigating the incident, which happened at about 9pm. A police spokeswoman said: "We are appealing for two boys who were near the location of the incident to contact us. They are not in trouble, but officers want to speak to them to established what they witnessed." No arrests have been made in relation to the incident.

Call police on 08453 300222.

Leave a tribute for Tommy.

A very sad occassion when a child is taken from a family. My thoughts are with you and what a joy it is to have shared the times you did as a Family. Your Angel will now be watching you. Believe, that time is a great healer and i wish you as a Family happier times to come.

I am very upset about what happened, I live just a few yards down the road to where tommy died, I, myself, being 14 have realised that there are less kids at the skatepark and the play park. I'm am really devistated. I also think that its a lesson to all people in borehamwood, if your a pedestrian or a driver, you must always look out for other people. Even though I dont know tommy, I hope he is in heaven and is resting in peace. Amen

Tommy - We looked upon you as a Grandson as I know my son looked upon you as his son. Boisterous and lively and a little mischevious - and thats excatly what little boys should be like! You were always good-mannered and courteuos and a pleasure to have around. You brought lots of happiness to our life and we will miss playing football with you in the garden!!! We will cherish all of our memories we have of time spent with you and all the times you have made us laugh. We will miss your big cheeky grin so much. Rest in Peace Angel. All our deepest love ****
