A mother-of-four from Walthamstow who is believed to have been trying to take her children into Syria has been held in Turkey.

Police in several countries launched a hunt for Zahera Tariq, 33, after she went missing on Tuesday.

She is believed to have been trying to reach radical family members in Syria.

Today, (September 1) officers received confirmation from the Turkish authorities that the woman had been detained in Turkey, along with her four children, who are all said to be safe and well.

Officers are liaising with the Turkish authorities and enquiries continue.

Commander Richard Walton, from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, said: "I'd like to thank the public and media for their help and support with our appeal to locate this mother and her four young children over the weekend.

"We had very real concerns that she may have been planning to travel with her children to Syria and she has now been detained with the children in Turkey.

"I would also like to thank our police counterparts in the Netherlands and Turkey, with whom we continue to have excellent working relationships."

High ranking ISIS man Abu Rumaysah from Walthamstow is married to Zahera's 30-year-old sister.

It is believed they could have been advising Zahera on how to travel to Syria.

Earlier today a council spokesperson said the authority was looking into care arrangements for the four children.

He said: "Our greatest concern is for the children involved. We understand that the family is working with the police and we are making the necessary plans to care for the children if they return to the UK.

"We are proud of our strong and diverse community and we are working together to counter extremist views."
