A former Labour councillor has been cleared of assaulting a 54-year-old man.

Haydar Ulus, independent councillor for Haselbury, was found not guilty of assaulting Hasan Boran at a Cash and Carry in Brandwood Road, Edmonton.

The 36-year-old claimed he punched Mr Boran in self-defence in February 2014 after fearing he had a knife.

Wood Green Crown Court were shown CCTV footage of the incident, which lawyers acting against him argued showed him “striding purposely in high dudgeon” towards Mr Boran before the scuffle begins.

A video taken after the attack also shows Mr Ulus grabbing a shovel as he heads towards Mr Boran, before having it taken off him.

Mr Ulus told the court he was trying to defend himself because Mr Boran had a fork in his hand which he used to stab Mr Ulus on the temple.

Lawyers acting against the councillor were unable to provide any witnesses during the week-long trial and relied solely on the camera footage.

Hatun Firat, Cllr Ulus’ cousin, was also acquitted of the same offences by the jury.
