One man has suggested Walton needs a “major clean up” after he was repeatedly approached by prostitutes.

He posted his experiences with the women in their 30s on walton-on-thames.org, a public forum, to ask if others had also encountered a similar problem in the area.

Earleir this year there were arrests in the borough in connection with trafficking.

The man, who posted in the forum, known only as “Grant”, claimed he was offered services outside KFC in Walton High Street as well as around other parts of the town.

In a post he wrote: “I wanted to bring to your attention the increase in prostitution in the local Walton and Hersham area.

“I have been approached three times in the past two months asking me if I wanted any ‘business’.

“The first time was at 10pm in May by a lady in her late 30s who approached my car on St John’s estate and asked me if I was ‘free tonight and wanted any business’.”

Originally thinking he was being offered drugs, the man soon realised he was being propositioned.

He wrote: “In shock [I] told her I wasn’t interested and she replied ‘come on sir, it’s a special deal for a guy like you’.”

Walton South Councillor Christine Elmer said she had not been aware of prostitution in Walton before this discussion thread but passed the information on to Elmbridge neighbourhood police, once she was sure the poster was serious, and others had reported similar experiences.

Surrey Police have said they are aware of the recent postings to do with street prostitution in Walton and would patrol the area.

A spokesman said: “In Surrey we do not have a large problem with street prostitution, however, there have been warrants executed at premises suspected of being used as brothels and police will seek to bring about prosecutions where the evidence allows."

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Although it is currently legal to pay for sex in the UK, running an agency or brothel and soliciting for sex including street-walking all remain illegal.

It said: “You will be amazed at the stunning selection of escorts Walton on Thames has to offer.”

Although not linked to these events, Sussex Police intercepted a group suspected of bringing women from south-east Asia into prostitution in hotels across south-east England in June.

Earlier this year an outraged father complained after he and his children stumbled upon three elderly men dressed in tennis skirts engaging in sexual activity in Desborough Island in neighbouring Weybridge on a Sunday afternoon.

Cari Mitchell, from the English Collective of Prostitutes, said: “What we would hope is that people would support decriminalisation here as that’s the way that people can get off the streets and work together with friends. We know now that there are many more people working on the streets just to get food.”
