Nothing says August in Britain like heavy downpours and flood warnings.

After a month's worth of rain fell in a few hours yesterday causing flooding in some places, the wet weather is set to continue today (August 14).

The Met Office's Marco Petagna said: "We saw some parts of the south east, especially towards Kent, seeing up to 40mm of rain in one hour, and totals up to about 70mm across parts of Sussex and Kent, so two to three inches."

A yellow weather warning is in place for London and the south east with locally heavy rain - which has already affected the rest of England - lingering over the area for the early part of today.

The Met Office warns rain is likely to be both persistent and heavy at times, with chances of thunder.

Towards the end of the day there is a risk that intense thundery downpours may develop again during the late afternoon and evening across south east England.

The public have been advised that there may be local disruption due to water surface flooding.

Despite the rain it may still feel muggy with maximum temperatures of 20c.

According to forecasters this weekend's weather is expected to be more settled.
