A man found hiding underneath a table at a golf club allegedly used a fire extinguisher to break down a door in his escape from police officers before he was tasered at the weekend.

It has been suggested he was a wedding guest at a ceremony hosted at Burhill Golf Club the previous day. It is believed he had been accidentally locked inside the clubhouse, dating back to 1726 in Burwood Road, before setting off alarms in his attempt to leave.

The man was discovered at about 2.50am on Sunday, August 9, when the alarm had been activated sparking a police search of the Hersham premises in the early hours of the morning.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "He initially refused to come out, before jumping up, running at the officer and assaulting him.

"The man continued to resist arrest and ran out of the building, using a fire extinguisher to break down the door and make his escape, before being detained by officers in the car park.

"The man continued to be violent towards officers and a taser was deployed."

He was taken to St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey, the spokesman added.

The episode has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A 50-year-old man from Hersham was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and has been bailed to return to Staines police station later this month.
