This is what Paddington station will look like after an 18-month revamp that’s under way is completed.

Network Rail is making a range of improvements to the station which is used by a growing number of passengers, forecast to be 61 million this year.

A retail area at the back of the main station known as The Lawn is being renovated to provide more shopping choices and food and drink outlets.

More seating areas are being added to the station, while the glass on the roof is being replaced with new, clear windows to let in more natural daylight.

A new paint job around the Grade I listed structure will also help improve its appearance.

Train operator First Great Western is carrying out work to its ticket office, including 12 new counters and ticket machines.

Natalie Holden, Network Rail’s senior commercial scheme sponsor for the project, said: “Paddington is one of Britain’s busiest stations and getting busier each year, so it’s only right that passengers have the facilities to make their travelling experience better.

“We’re working closely with English Heritage to preserve the heritage of this iconic building, making sure the changes we make are sensitive to the original structure and take account of its Grade I listed status.”

Train services will not be affected by the work but passengers will notice changes to the layout of the station and to some of the retail outlets.
