London is officially the most expensive place to live, not just in Britain but also in Europe.

That’s according to a study which has found you’ll need a whopping £692 just to cover the average cost of renting a room in the capital.

Yes, just for a room – and this London figure is 13 per cent higher than in 2012.

If you’re feeling hard done by you could try heading north, such as to Edinburgh (£447), Liverpool £336 or Sheffield (£335).

If you want to feel really depressed consider the fact that people in Paris (£397) and Milan (£363) are not only living in two of the most stylish and cultured cities in Europe they are also paying considerably less in rent than you.

And tenants in Valencia (£165), Palermo (£166) and Malaga (£185) don’t just have good weather and food, they also pay a fraction of London prices to live there.

The figures come from flat-sharing company EasyRoommate.com

Its CEO Albin Serviant CEO puts London’s high prices down to the renting lifestyle in this country, with more young professionals and students in the market for renting rooms than elsewhere in Europe.

He said: “Going back over 10 years, renting has long been an accepted way of living in the UK, meaning the high demand from tenants seeking a room has led to landlords inflating room rental fees year on year.

“Teamed with London being such an appealing place for international workers, renters have been suffering from high rent costs for a long time.”

So, who else fancies moving to Naples in southern Italy for just £215 a month?
