A drunk driver who crashed at the Hindhead Tunnel has been banned from driving for two years.

Lloyd Johns, of Charlwood Drive, Oxshott, crashed his BMW into barriers at the entrance to the tunnel on the A3, sending workers fleeing.

The 23-year-old appeared at Guildford Magistrates' Court on July 7, having been found guilty of drink-driving and driving without due care and attention.

He was fined a total of £900 and ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge and £620 costs.

CCTV footage caught the events on February 17, where Johns had ignored warning signs and an HGV putting on hazard lights he failed to notice.

He later provided a breath sample of 61 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35mg.

PC Tom Richardson said: "This was a shocking incident which fortunately didn't lead to any serious injury or loss of life, as is sadly often the case when alcohol and driving are mixed."
