A convoy of travellers’ caravans arrived on Epsom Downs last night.

On the Epsom and Ewell Beat Facebook page Jackie Elkins, Epsom’s neighbourhood inspector, said there had been "a large traveller incursion on the Downs".

She said that 15 traveller vehicles and caravans had parked up at the Epsom Downs viewpoint car park.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said this morning: "It was reported around 9.50pm last night.

"It is down to the landowner to get [eviction] notices.

"We go in and support that in case there’s a breach of the peace."

The caravans arrived 48 hours ahead of popular 1970s and 80s London band Madness performing at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Thursday night.

Surrey Police said this afternoon that Epsom Downs Racecourse, the landowner, asked the travellers to leave and they served a "section 61 notice" on them.

They have now moved on.

A section 61 notice is used by police on private land and to remove individuals or their vehicles where two or more people are trespassing.

Inspector Elkins said: “We were made aware that around 15 caravans had parked in the viewpoint car park just before 10pm last night.

"Three vehicles and three towing vehicles had also managed to move onto the nearby golf course and officers were quick to respond to prevent further vehicles from moving onto this site.

"We have worked with the landowners and this enabled us to serve the section 61 notice earlier today.

"The group has since moved on and we will be monitoring the area closely to ensure that they do not return.”
