After years of campaigning, Sadiq Khan MP has welcomed the council's agreement to introduce 11 new 20mph zones.

People in the 11 areas voted in favour of lower speed limits when consulted earlier in the year.

Mr Khan said: "I welcome the news that there are lots more 20mph zones coming to Tooting soon, as well as those we secured in parts of Furzedown, Balham and Tooting Bec earlier this year.

"But after years of calling on Wandsworth Council to introduce 20mph limits on residential roads, I don’t understand why the council are insisting on such a costly piecemeal process.

"There is clear support for 20mph among Wandsworth residents - instead of consulting residents on a street by street basis, why not consult all residents now?

"The fight for more 20mph zones in our borough continues."

The neighbourhoods with newer speed limits are Nightingale ward, Thamesfield, the "Toastrack" area of Wandsworth Common, the Putney Vale estate in Roehampton, the Wendleworth estate in Wandsworth, the Southfields "Grid" area including Pirbright Road, the Girdwood Road area of Southfields, the Oakhill Road area of east Putney, the Trinity Crescent area, Victoria Drive in West Hill and Rogers Road in Tooting.

Transport spokesman Councillor Jonathan Cook said: "We have listened carefully to residents and businesses in these 11 areas, and having heard what they say, are now bringing in the lower speed limits they want implemented in their neighbourhoods."
